Kali: Something that I love about your work is how you approach sort of morally ambiguous woman in history. In this story, the thing that I was really drawn to was the experience of people and specifically women during the German occupation of France who were not outright resistors. How do they get along in occupied territory? And can they do it without sacrificing like a very core part of who they are? Fabian starts out the war as a horizontal collaborator because she's lost everything else. She gets out of that desperate circumstance quite quickly. But that haunts her for the rest of the book.
