Philip the fourth appears to have been a kings can do whatever the hek they want kind of guy. He was aggressive, expansionistic and hostile towards any one who would undermined the authority of the crown or caused problems for royal finances. A bitter dispute broke out between philip and the pope at the time, a man named boniface the eighth. After his war with england, Philip decided that he was going to flex his kingly power and start taxing the revenues of the churches and monasteries in France. The pope responded by flexing back and offering a papal bull saying that all kings needed to ask his permission if they wanted to tax church property. This opened up
