Most problems are caused by not researching about the needs of the specific plant you've got. All plants need light to survive but some need a greater intensity than others for example cactine succulents which need to be on a windersill if they are to stand any chance of thriving. So if you get the light right then your plant stands a much better chance of thrive. I'd say another cause of a plant looking unwell can be what it's potted in. In succulents survive in areas with very free draining sandy gritty soil with low organic matter so they should be potted in something similar to that. But pests are another common cause of ill looking plants of course
