The Evolution of Portland Cement

Cement has been used for thousands of years to build pyramids and ancient structures. The Romans pioneered a new type of cement, so they started using volcanic ash. Portland cement contains a very special phase called tri calcium silicate that is only stable at around 1500 degrees Celsius. As it falls out of the kiln and is quenched, this tri calcium silicates phase is sort of frozen. That's what leads to Portland cement's high early strength and early set time.
