Is There a Military Threat With the Barents Sea?

Norway and Russia negotiated for 40 years to demarcate their exclusive economic zone in the Barents Sea. The treaty makes possible hydrocarbon exploration because it essentially agrees that they will share it. A recent assessment by the US Geological Survey estimated that there might be something like 11 billion barrels of crude oil and 380 trillion cubic feet of natural gas under or in the B Arctic Ocean.
