The Windward Islands and the West Indies

Sailing and navigation were so foundational to the creation of these societies. They talk about up wind and down wind. Being further to the east or the southeast puts you up wind, that's where the prevailing winds are coming from. And then being the other way, to the west or northwest, puts you down wind. So people distinguished between windward islands,. places like barbadoes, trinidad, grenada, saint vincent as windward islands. As for lesser antilles, some are more mountainous and some are not. Some are flat, low lying islands of coral and limestone.
