The Second Industrial Revolution

It's extremely dense, energy-wise, far more dense than anything you get out of wheat and to feed animals or slaves. And this is the driving force behind what we call the second industrial revolution. Up until yesterday in historical terms, it was cheaper to send a boat from Virginia to India than it was to get the same amount of stuff from the coast of Virginia to Charlottesville. This is a thing that people agonized over in Virginia for forever up until trains.
