The Sklavini and the Huns

The origin of the Slavs is still debated and I'm not going to pretend to add anything to that discussion. What we do know is that they were living north of the belt of German tribes familiar to the Byzantines during the 5th century. Their appearance now in the 6th century suggests that they began to migrate south as many of the German tribes packed up and entered the Roman Empire. The information they had identified the Slavs as living in forests, rivers, lakes and marshes rather than cities and towns.
