After her death, Guane was eulogized as both daughter to Montaigne and sister to Lipsius. The insertion in the essays is under a cloud of suspicion, though. Scholars are unsure whether Guane herself may have added it to burnish her own reputation. This would be consistent with what has been termed her readiness to convert his appreciation into a vehicle for self-promotion.
