Galileo's Lectures on Dante - A Brief History

In 1633, exactly 45 years after his triumphant series of lectures on Dante, Galileo would find himself at the mercy of the Inquisition. His crime, according to the Holy Office that tried him, was quote, heresy, namely of having held and believed a doctrine which is false and contrary to the divine and holy scripture. In this series of lectures, he used mathematics to reinforce and add yet more credibility to an ancient cosmological system. The positive reception of his Dante lectures helped Galileo clinch a much sought after position as the chair of mathematics at the University of Pisa.
