Crossing the Waters: Britain in the Dark Age
Historiansplaining: A historian tells you why everything you know is wrong
The Dream of the Rusty
The poem describes a dream in which the cross comes to life and speaks to them. Pieces of it are found on the ruthwell cross, an elaborate carved ston one cross erected at what's now scotland. Another famous surviving poem from probably the mid seven hundreds is called the dream of the rude. The idea was just taken right over into cadman's hymn and adapted as a word for god or protector. So in all kinds of ways, the ideas, the language, the imagery of the pre christian pagan belief system bled right over.
