James Cook and Elizabeth Bats
In 1762, James Cook returned to England after a tour in Canada. He had just turned 34 years old and was an officer in the Royal Navy. His career was on the upswing so he decided it was time to find himself a wife. Elizabeth Bats is 20-year-old daughter of a well-to-do innkeeper. She was said to be smart and sensible, a lot like her future husband. They were married within a few weeks of meeting in December of 1762.
