The gulags were forced labor camps where Stalin would send his political enemies and really anyone he felt was a threat. Families of four would get five slices of bread to eat per day, often the food was moldy and rotten. In terms of amenities, there was one light bulb for the whole place. One person who was imprisoned in a gulag reported that for seven full weeks, he couldn't even wash himself or change his underwear.
