When somebody gets a significant amount of clout for being good in one particular domain or having a take, it's very easy to get out over your skis and then start commenting on stuff that you don't know about. I think that the IDW was a much needed like vector of splintering somehow, like it's sort of injected itself. It managed to inject itself and create a break point where people even now know what they mean by the intellectual dark web. Even if it's not something which had the legs to maintain its longevity longer term, perhaps it was an important sort of like breaking switch.
