The Story of Shig's Mother and the Baby Magpie Bird
Shig says his mother raised him alone until he was four. She found work cooking and cleaning for a rich family who made her live in their home. Shig lived with the babysitter most of the time, except on Sundays when they'd go to the park. Seeing the baby magpie who couldn't get back to its mother meant something to him.
