There's No Essence to a Game

The idea that there's no essence to a game, there's no single thing it has, is going to illustrate a much bigger moral. So what you're saying is that football was a game with winners and losers, teams, a ball. Ring-a-ring a rose is played by children is a kind of game, but it doesn't have winning and losing. And finding one's way into these different periods of time and space is one way in which we see the organic growth and outgrowth of a language.
