Papadock's Transformation From Benign Country Doctor Into Rampaging Dictator
In 1946, Papadock begins to climb the political ladder in Port-au-Prince. He becomes Minister for Health under a fellow noirist, President Dumasay Estimé. In 1956, de Valle's enemies in the government are themselves overthrown by the army. The young doctor emerges from hiding and announces he will be standing as a champion of the impoverished Black majority. His hell-raising speeches castigating the light skinned elite see him gather real momentum. Just four years later, the army overthrows President Estimé's regime, forcing Papadock out of political office.
