Is There a Theory of Gravity?

String theory was originally developed to explain gravity. But it has other uses, such as explaining unexplained patterns in the standard model of particle physics. This is a great example of something that i actually think is really important in not just in physics, but generally speaking. Are many ideas that re cycled and have their home in places other than where they were first invented. And certainly string thery seems to be an example of that.
