Are We Caring for African Objects?
Less than half of the objects that were taken are in the national museum. Many are in local authority museums, which have no legal restriction to returns. We've had whole museums like the second of the pit rivers museums sold off as recently as the 19 sixties and 19 seventies. So this distinction in between human and cultural remains is a very false one. How can we talk about tought in terms of the false imprisonment of ancestors? That's what we need from our lawyer coll s, is to help us find anthropology and law coming together to make these arguments and to make them stick.
