The Importance of Parley Pratt
The murder of Parley Pratt didn't necessarily have much of an effect on Brigham Young personally because Pratt had married outside of Young's authorization. But he still used the murder as inspiration to pump up the Mormons, comparing it to the vigilante murder of Joseph Smith. And Young needed his men ready because the army was well on its way to Utah. This whole thing was perfect for Buchanan because He hoped the Mormons would distract the country from the whole slavery thing.
