The Metaphysical Sin of Hell

The catechism of the Catholic Church says that hell, by definition, is definitive self-exclusion from communion with God and the blessed. "I'm very uncomfortable with the kind of hell where oh well, you just didn't do enough good things or you didn't get to confession in time before you were hit by the car," he said. In order to go to hell, the catechism said, one must freely commit a mortal sin and remain impenitent until death.
