The Clinical Pearl of Syphilis Vertical Transmission Rates
Transmission is possible and has been reported up to eight years after acquisition of infection if left untreated. With early primary syphilis, there is a much higher rate of transmission than late latent syphilis. There seems to be this reverse transmission slash pathology relationship. First trimester, much worse for the child, but lower risk of infection. Third trimester,. much higher risk of infection, but at birth, they're mainly asymptomatic. Late congenital syphilis can occur after two years of life or more.
