How to Improvise Music in Real Time

Singer/songwriter uses loop able sample and hold to create his own sound. Uses a stickle for timing so he doesn't have too much time to improvise. He's big on compartmentalising things in the song writing process. If i'm recording stuff, i just want to focus on recording when i'm editing.
