Prussian Field Armies in Western Saxony
There were three Prussian field armies in Western Saxony. Unlike the French, these armies were totally separate from one another. There was no united command structure other than that of King Frederick William III. The largest of these three armies was led by the Duke of Brunswick. He had been the overall commander of the main Allied offensive into France at the very beginning of the War of the First Coalition. It was Brunswick who was stopped at the famous Battle of Volmy - which some argue saved the new French Republic.
