History of Ideas: George Orwell

Past Present Future

CHAPTER

The Lion and the Unicorn

In 1941 Orwell wasn't yet the person that we now think of as George Orwell. He was a successful novelist, not particularly successful but successful enough. In 1941 he wasn't really thinking so much about Stalinism, there a bit. There's a Manic Street preacher's song it's about Orwell and the Spanish Civil War. It has in it the line if I can shoot rabbits then I can shoot fascists which I always thought came from Orwell until I found out it didn't.
