The Problem With Internal Orientalism in the Balkans

The concept of internal or internalized orientalism is not mine actually. It was especially constructed by American historian Mary Newberger in her important book from 2011 titled the Orient Within Muslim minorities and the negotiation of modern Bulgarian nationhood. I think it is a useful concept that explains to a degree Bulgarian desire to purify the socialist and the post-socialist nation from Muslim and oriental elements so it could claim membership in European civilization. But such sweeping generalizing that all Balkan nationalisms are predicated on this idea is typical of white and western scholars who are gazing at the Balkans but do not reflect on how their own definitions extend the very oriental gaze that made the Balkans in the first
