There are at least a dozen, maybe dozens of sambals on the Sri Lankan table. You certainly do get pounded ones like there's pounded red chilies. And it can be super spicy and it can be performing a role a bit like ketchup which is kind of a side dish to add flavour to what you're eating. So yeah, they're each kind of delivering I guess a concentrated hit of flavour in a different way.
