Poland lost the big exploration in 1950, 64, when our friends from Europe and the world climbed all the 8,000 meter peaks. At the end of 1979, a group of 20 climbers set off from Warsaw to Kathmandu. It had taken Polish diplomats two years of unofficial lobbying to convince a skeptical Nepali government to issue a winter permit for Mount Everest.
