The Legacy of Empire and the Imperial Legacy
There is something in the bones of finance that is about exploiting and extracting. And that really comes to the fore in these kind of imperial or post-imperial escapades. I talk about the rubber boom in Shanghai, where expat Europeans set up a stock exchange out of a hotel on largely European lines. It's fantastically profitable but it was financed by slave labour from another part of the British Empire. Those kind of structures are exactly the same as those being used during the dot com era. The same kind of thinking,. the same kind of extraction, the same kinds of sets of technologies.
