There was also a cultural hibernation in the camp. Politics and religion were talked about almost continuously. The religious interest of the prisoners, as far and as soon as it developed, was the most sincere imaginable. A few months before our liberation we used to have spiritual meetings with spirits. In spite of all the enforced physical and mental life at Auschwitz there was still time for people to deepen their spirituality. Of those who did not do this they often suffered from depression or even madness.
