Barcelona and catalonia are seen as the most free and defiant part of spain. They openly flout the sort of repressive, puritanical norms that they had been living under in franco. There is a confluence of left wing popularism, regional nationalism, or separatism, and modernism. The right parties continue to support a strong central government which must maintain social order and maintain the integrity of the nation rights.
