Advertisers who don't understand the benefit of focus want mass. If you're running for office or trying to make some change in the world, it's still exactly the same: More demands, more attention. What that pushes us to do is dumb it down. And if one person starts to do this, if one competitor shows up and says, here, this is faster and easier than the alternatives, well, then the ratchet turns. This is how culture changes, how it becomes corrupted, and then how it moves up, sideways, or down.
