How to Measure Dopamine Release in the Brain
The dopamine reporter is a fake receptor that instead of acting like a dopamine receptor signals downstream. When it binds dopamine, if there's a confirmation change and the molecule becomes more fluorescent. The researchers are using computation to kind of segment out these different behavioral modules. And when they align the dopamine signal to when the mouse goes from one module to the next, they see a very clear signal where at the end of a module before they transition, there’s a slight dip of dopamine. Right after transition to a new module, there's a peak of dopamine.
