Arthur Desmond was an outspoken defender of Maori rights to their own ancestral land. He claimed that his radical politics had prompted the landowners he relied on for work to blacklist him. Despite his substantial progress, Arthur Desmond still lost the election by some 400 votes. By some accounts, he was quite literally run out of town.
