The Importance of Triere in the Western Empire
Triere was one of the most important administrative centers in the entire western empire until around 400. The fact that the emperor and the Praetorian prefect were so often resident in Gaul tied the region's aristocracy ever more closely to imperial politics. This system started to break down at the end of the 4th century, with serious effects on especially northern Gaul. When the imperial court left northern Gaul for good, this had several effects.
