The Path to Hell and Hades
Theseus is describing his own experience of dying there because he died and then he just kind of just come back. The path itself begins to draw you down, like waves that sweep whole fleets of ships unwillingly off course. Beyond the Lathe lies the foul cockatas, river of tears, motionless as a swamp where starving vultures and the mournful owl shriek overhead their prophecies of pain. Feudal shame averts his burning face always too late and thin anxiety stalks nervously pursued by dark eyed fear. Then last of all, old age is staff in hand tottering forward step by painful step.
