In Tocqueville's Democracy in America, the word immigrant does not appear or immigration anywhere in it. And that really this in many ways was the predominant form of settlement in the United States for the majority of our history from 1620 onward. The first big wave of non-British immigration to the US began to happen in the late 1840s when you had a combination of the Irish potato famine and a variety of failed revolutions in central Europe.
