The Nationalists were much more savvy in their use of manpower. The Republicans end up having to conscript a far larger number of men for a smaller military force. This is an absolute millstone that hands around the Republic's neck throughout the war, and we say, can never escape from. If you deconstruct the situation, you find situations completely different. You have political organisations, socialists, communists, anarchists who had a fairly solid core group of militants. And then beyond them, which are people who are, frankly, totally ignorant of politics,. They just clog along on a day-to-day basis.
