Why the Home Secretary Was Still Working With the Police?
East End MP Edward Pickers' Gill had been campaigning against police abuses since his election in 1885. He was worried about the killer roaming Whitechapel, but he was even more worried about the rot in the government of the city that allowed it to happen. The whole city was on Tender Hooks - a phrase from clothmaking when new-made sheets of wool were hung like tents on hooked wooden frames.
