With trusted computing being what it is to some extent, I use a program called Secretive on the Mac that winds up generating an SSH key pair. But the private portion only lives inside the secure enclave and can never leave. All it could do is sign individual requests but you can disable that part. It just means that there is nothing sensitive living on disk to wind up getting compromised,. which is a nice way to live.
