The Difference Between Repression and Suppression

There isn't actually any such thing as repression. The literature is very, very clear that oppression isn't possible. What we can do is suppress traumas. Repression means it is completely out of consciousness. Something terrible happened to you. So you get rid of it from consciousness and it doesn't affect you because it's completely repressed. Suppression is when we can't deal with it or we don't want to so we put it out of sight. We have used our cognitive control processes to actively stop retrieval of that event. That still affects us in very minor ways that we don't realize is affecting us but because it's suppressed, it's still there in the background.
