The Case of Samuel Worcester and Eliza Butler

Georgia passed a law prohibiting white men from residing in the Cherokee territory without first obtaining a license. Samuel Worcester, along with Eliza Butler and seven other missionaries, deliberately courted arrest to help bring the question of Cherokee independence before the Supreme Court.
