The book is based on a true story about two nuns in the seventeenth century. The pair were able to escape their convent after they stole and set fire to a fellow nun's body. Author Gregg Asly believes that some of these stories may have been real. He also says there was no legal protection for women who had same sex relationships at this time. But he does think French culture did become more accepting of affairs by the late 16th century.
