Should We Abandon the Nation of Great Works?

A great work is a work that provides employment to my students who can then write about it and analyze it and get promoted. I don't want to abandon the category of greatness. If you ask me about novels, films, works of art I'm going to apply the label great to some of them unhesitatingly. When that happens and it happens with reassuring frequency I know that I'm in the presence of something great but any definition more formal than that one will I think fail.
