Shackleton and the Trans-Atlantic Expedition
Shackleton wanted to be the first to reach the south pole. Got to within 97 nautical miles of it in 19 hundredn nine. A cautious man, he didn't think he'd make it so turned around and went home. 28 men were participants in what was grandly called the imperial trans antarctic expedition. They sailed from the u k on the very day that briton declared war on germany. And they disappeared into the ice and were not seen again for nearly two years.
