The Portability of Gold
If we could have somehow sent gold across a telecommunications channel, there would have been no need for a central bank. We went from placing our trust in a free market game theoretic process to trusting this institution instead. So I think it's kind of idiosyncratic and that we just happened to end up here on this planet with a certain amount of gold.
