Tolkin's Robot Age
Tolkin describes the modern age as a robot age. The ingenuity of means has combined with ugliness and the inferiority of result. It's really, i think it's a statement on the post industrial world where everything is utilitarian and ugly - but not as they don't make em like they used to. We've lost a connection to the earth, i think, is part of it. He says that motor cars are more alive than dragons or horses: 'On its face he's right, he's right' But Tolkin also criticises critics who confound escape with flight in his work.
