Douglass was a stupendous historical figure about that, there can't be any serious doubt. And then when you find Abraham X. Kendi dismissing Douglass as a racist, he just has to laugh. W.E.B. Du Bois also comes in as having been initially a racist, but then having transformed himself into an anti-racist. So the contrast is on many levels. First sheer intellectual, if I can use that expression again, sheer intellectual heft,. Then there is seriousness of purpose, then there is self-sacrifice.
