Protestantism is rooted in this idea of scripture alone, that is of surrendering any idea of a magisterium or a pope. So when the first slaves get sold on the coast of Virginia in the early 1600s, some people are all Protestants there. And one of the main arguments was because they're like, well, listen, we're supposed to love our neighbor. These are fellow human beings. We can't do that. It doesn't seem very Christian, but very quickly they found a scriptural justification for doing that.
