Three schemas in the same database that are physically at the same place, but logically separate. The application is independently talking to them. For all practical purposes, they're independent. Now this is where you start bringing in replication. And then what else is happening when it's your right, get replicated to the other side. You take one or two of these out, the rest of the application is fine because it doesn't have that much load.

Pramod Sadalage is a Director at ThoughtWorks and the co-author of the Jolt Award winning “Refactoring Databases”. In this episode, we discussed data essentials in software architecture.
